John Oswalt on Progress

But is that progress? Or is it merely change? What is the goal toward which human society is tending? Or are we too, like our 10,000 year-old forbears, only wishing to survive as long as possible with a maximum of comfort, pleasure, and security? In fact, the idea of progress is dependent on the idea that our Creator has a goal for us, outside of ourselves, toward which we humans were made to progress and against which our progress can be measured. Give up that truth, and ‘progress’ becomes a chimera.

I make my money as a web developer at a tech security company. I chase my passions as a director for the Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Over the last couple of years I've come to love this city, and I want to see it be as great as it can be. Why am I here?

Solomon said it's all vanity. There's really nothing new under the sun regarding the human condition.

You guys are too smart for me. (I had to look up chimera.)

    Alison, I've missed you!

Democracy is overrated compared to what may or may not lie at the outer reaches of human creativity. Also, compared to the descriptions we have of the church in Acts. And what Jesus said.

I recently read something to the effect of, "Democracy isn't bad theory, just bad math. It's the idea that the will of the people is less evil than the will of a benevolent dictator." Most of the true justice done in the US — abolition, women's suffrage, Civil Rights &#8212 were not the will of the majority, but the work of a passionate minority working through the courts and legislature, against the majority.

I agree that "democracy is the worst form of government…except for everything else that's been tried." One day we'll try that God's Kingdom thing, and it will be good…
