Trying to Convince Nobody to Change the World
I’m sharing this (Why Must Dudes Ruin Perfectly Good Superheroine and Action Franchises with Their Requests for Diversity?) for two reasons.
One: I tend to agree with the sentiment…there’s no reason for Marvel and DC’s movies to be so male heavy, especially considering the roles of Ms./Captain Marvel, Spider Woman, Wonder Woman, Black Canary, and others as leaders in the comics. Black Widow is a bad-ass, but isn’t central to the stories. Black Canary made it into Arrow, but the Flash beat her to a spin-off. The studios are making enough money to take a risk to change the nature of the genre moving forward, which would be good for everyone except artists who can only draw boobs. Sorry guys.
Two: this is really unpleasant writing. As satire, it captures the really annoying points of a misogynistic fanboy rant perfectly…but what’s the purpose? It’s echo chamber writing, which isn’t meant to change anyone’s mind. Not really; it’s meant to shame the other side. That’s bad. Hear that. Whatever you’re arguing for, if people aren’t being killed/injured/poisoned/enslaved or something of that sort, SHAMING IS BAD. You will never win. And you’ll only polarize the conversation unnecessarily. Hell, I agree, yet I want to argue with the author because the writing pisses me off. You can do better. We all can do better.
I’d love to see a time when there are as many quality heroines as heroes in comics, and for them to get the same treatment (yes, the “male gaze” is a thing). But this type of writing is not going to get the job done.
